Service for Peace, a non-profit 501c3 group,
organizes service projects that address real
needs in the community while providing a training ground where volunteers, particularly
high school and college-age youth, can learn leadership, compassion, and a spirit
of public service. Recently, Service for Peace
has done tsunami relief in Thailand, hurricane relief on the Gulf Coast,
and has assisted victims of the recent earthquake in Pakistan.
Here in the San Diego chapter, we have raised $5,500 to buy wheelchairs for injured kids in the Middle East, donned animal costumes to entertain kids in homeless and women's shelters, saved habitat for endangered birds, helped local schools with painting and maintenance and have constantly promoted the message that service to others makes life worth living.
On Jan. 16, 2006, Service for Peace organized a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at Gompers Charter Middle School that attracted 90 volunteers, most of them youth, to paint walls and polls at the school and to make inspiration banners for the students. In April, Service for Peace sponsored a Day of Service at the Jr. Seau Sports complex and Parkway Middle School in La Mesa. On June 3rd, we prepared a vacant lot to receive classrooms at King/Chavez Charter School in Barrio Logan. We are currently working to raise money to renovate buildings for an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico, and are organizing 10 service projects with over 1,000 volunteers for the 2007 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in San Diego.
