Balboa Park Hiker Safety Project
On Tuesday morning, Jan 16th, 200 dedicated volunteers will help create a safe place for hikers and joggers at this beautiful trail at Balboa Park. Winding down through the forest, the trail offers rare seclusion in the midst of the busy city. But undergrowth creates potential hiding places on both sides, preventing users from seeing clearly who may be around them. We will work with the Rangers to clear away this brush, making the trail safer and more beautiful.

Walk for African AIDS Orphans
This fall the San Diego chapter of Service for Peace will hold another walk, similar to the Walk for Wheelchairs that launched our chapter in April last year. Our goal is to collect $30,000 in one Saturday afternoon to help the more than 800,000 children around the city of Durban in South Africa who became orphans when their parents died of AIDS. Like the Walk for Wheelchairs, all proceeds from the walk will go to the Rotary foundation, where it can compete for a 10 to 1 matching grant. The money will be used to buy trucks that will deliver food leftover from hotel buffets and bakeries to locations where the AIDS orphans are being cared for.

Days of Service in La Mesa
Service for Peace worked with Parkway Middle School, the City of La Mesa, and the Wal-Mart stores at Grossmont Center and Parkway Plaza to beautify the Junior Seau Sports Complex, which consists of two football/soccer fields used both by the City of La Mesa and Parkway Middle School. We pulled weeds, trimmed plants, and restored plantings on an eroded embankment between the sports fields and the school. A temporary fence was erected to give the plants a chance to reestablish themselves.
